Wine 2023 – Update #02

15 June 2023

The plans have changed a bit. We are still planning to purchase 8 lugs each of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, which will be barrel aged. However, instead of creating a Bordeaux blend for the blending wine, we now plan to purchase 3 lugs of Merlot.

The intention is to make 2 different Bordeaux blends, one based on Cabernet Sauvignon and one based on Cabernet Franc:

  • #1: 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 20% Merlot
  • #2: 60% Cabernet Franc, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 20% Merlot

Note that these percentages are merely guesses at this point. We will do taste testing and the percentages will probably vary.

At this time it’s estimated that Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc will each net about 18 gallons, while the Merlot will net 8 gallons. If we use 20% Merlot in each blend, that will leave 2 gallons each of the CS and CF.

Regardless of what we do, it’s likely that some will remain of 1 or 2 batches. These may be bottled “as is”, or may be blended into a Frankenwine.
