Wine Label Creation Process 03

September 2023
I documented my label creation for a projected 2023 wine, a Cabernet Franc heavy blend with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in this post. This post regards a Cabernet Sauvignon heavy blend with Cabernet Franc and Merlot.
The hard part for me is thinking up names for wines. If it’s a varietal, it’s easy (just call Cabernet Sauvignon by the name), but for blends it’s not.
One set of grandparents were Hungarian, so I took that as inspiration. Using “Rob Roy” as a model, I searched for famous Hungarian figures. I ended up choosing a famous Hungarian winemaker, and used the a photo taken by a WMT member as the background:
Obviously, if I was a commercial winery I couldn’t use his name, but I don’t sell wine and since the bottles will be seen by a handful of people, I don’t worry about.
Then I considered that in Bordeaux, the Left Bank wines are typically Cabernet Sauvignon heavy, so I looked at a map of Bordeaux and picked a name I liked.
It’s obvious I like the background, which was posted on WMT. I asked the photographer his permission to use the photo, and he granted it.
Feedback from family, so far, is to use the István Szepsy name for the wine. This illustrates that sometimes a label takes many iterations to complete, while others are very quick and focused.
Note: I like the Blanquefort name, and will use it in the future for a different Cabernet Sauvignon heavy blend.
